Subject:        Whitewater Self Defense Video and Safety introduction by Jim Collins

Meeting Topic

Jim Collins, a long time OWA member will introduce the video and the subject of whitewater safety.

We will be viewing parts of a video entitled “Whitewater Self Defense”.  This video has been purchased by the club and is available for all club members to check out and review.  Whitewater Self Defense helps paddlers avoid trouble and deal with unexpected problems. The emphasis is "everyday" river rescue, and fundamental skills every whitewater paddler should know.  This video includes new and proven safety techniques, bridging the gap between basic safety techniques and hard core river rescue.

Jim Collins has been involved in outdoor recreation since childhood, which was a long time ago.  His first whitewater boating was as a participant in the long defunct North Santiam Whitewater Festival in 1966.  He participated again in 1967 and then they ended the event (not because of his conduct but because of liability concerns).  His outdoor persuits consisted more of backpacking and mountaineering until the mid-80's when he got into rafting.   He does very few day trips (which is why I haven't seen lots of the club members on the river) but does do lots of multi-day trips including 13 Grand Canyon trips. Having been involved in boating on and off for the last 45 years he's seen his share of chaos and has a few tips and observations to pass on.
