Sandy River Showdown

The 1st annual Sandy River Showdown will take place on April 30 – May 1, 2011. This two day event will be packed with excitement and provide opportunity for athletes to test their mettle in the Sandy River Watershed.  This event will run in tandem with the Bull Run Slalom race (On Sunday), and we will cooperatively schedule events so that participants can participate in both activities.

Saturday, April 30 athletes will compete in the “Dam Derby” downriver race from Brightwood to the former Marmot Dam site.  This 7-8 mile down river race consists of many class II-III rapids with one crux rapid called Alder Creek (class III+).  The race will start at 10am, and will include categories for kayaks, paddle rafts, and catarafts.  Lunch will be served for participants at the former marmot dam site, and then paddlers will head over to Bull Run for Slalom practice in the afternoon.  Paddlers will also have the option (at their own risk- to paddle through the Sandy Gorge) and down to Dodge Park (9-11 miles lower).  A BBQ dinner (with music) will be served at Dodge Park at 5-7pm.

Sunday, May 1st, athletes will have the option to either race in the Bull Run Slalom Race (10am-3pm), or compete in the Dodge and Burn Adventure Relay Race.  The official race course will be announce 2 weeks prior to the event, but will include at least a 7 mile paddling event (kayaking or rafting), and a 3 mile trail run.  The race will start in Dodge Park, and end at Oxbow Park.   We will also have an exhibition Stand Up Paddle Board race through Oxbow park at 3pm on Sunday May 1st at the conclusion of the Adventure Race.  This 1-mile down river sprint will be a mass start SUP free for down class I riffles.

This event is sanctioned by Northwest River Guides and is sponsored by the Portland Water Bureau, BLM, METRO Parks, Jackson Kayak, GO PRO, and eNRG Kayaking. This two-day event was created by eNRG Kayaking to help support the efforts of We Love Clean Rivers 501c3, and Team River Runner PDX in cleaning the lower Sandy River at the end of August 29th, 2011.
