Confidence, Connection, and Cold Water: Lessons from River Safety Training
Submitted by Tara Malmquist
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the Oregon Whitewater Association’s annual River Safety Training at Dodge Park—an experience that challenged and inspired me in equal measure. Even though I’ve been a member of the association for six years, this was my first time participating in the weekend-intensive training, and it left me feeling more grounded in both my skills and my community.
The weekend was packed with hands-on learning and high-impact practice. From boat flipping drills to setting up mechanical advantage systems, we covered essential rescue techniques that will serve us well as we prepare for the season. I especially appreciated the time we spent working through a simulated rescue —skills that demand focus, coordination, and calm under pressure.
Beyond the technical training, I found myself growing more confident and comfortable in the water, supported by a welcoming and experienced group of fellow paddlers. I expanded my knot knowledge, sharpened my river vocabulary, and built stronger connections with others who share a love for whitewater. The emphasis on teamwork reminded me that safety on the river is just as much about trust and communication as it is about ropes and rigging.
Huge thanks to the Oregon Whitewater Association for sponsoring this powerful weekend of learning and connection. I’m heading into the season not just with new skills, but with a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for what’s ahead.
