Hello, fellow rafters!

One of the things I love most about our club is that we’re more than just a group of boaters—we’re a river community. We’re people who come together not only to paddle but to learn, to celebrate, and to give back. This year alone we’ve had excellent programs like Wilderness First Aid and Swiftwater Rescue training—skills that keep us sharp and safe out on the water (and give us bragging rights at the campfire). Our community also thrives through events like the Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival and the Lower Clack Cleanup. Whether we’re racing down rapids or hauling soggy tires out of the river, these gatherings keep the waterways (and our spirits) vibrant. And don’t forget our support for American Whitewater— an organization that helps protect the places we love to paddle.

We’ve got some great programs lined up too. October 8th’s meeting features a guest speaker you won’t want to miss. We’ll spotlight WaterStrong, an Oregon nonprofit with the mission to end drowning and promote safer, cleaner waters. Through programs in water safety, swimming, environmental education, and basic first aid/CPR—especially for underserved families—WaterStrong is building a safer future on and around the water. Their work is a powerful reminder of what it means to care for our rivers and communities.

On a personal note, my favorite club-led outing is the North Santiam Fall Colors Float from Packsaddle to Mill City. The fall colors of the Doug fir, western hemlock, Big Leaf Maples, Western red cedar and Red Alder show off their yellows, oranges and reds. The arboreal 9 mile river journey is filled with songbirds and woodpeckers and raptors.

And speaking of beauty, mark your calendars for our November 12th meeting. Our program will take us (at least in spirit) to the Wild Alaska River Tatshenshini. If you can’t pronounce it yet, don’t worry—the speakers will not only wow you with stunning stories and photos, but also provide free pronunciation practice.

Finally, I need your help: we’re always looking for great speakers. And I know you know people. Don’t be shy—invite them! Remind them it comes with free pizza, a welcoming crowd, and a chance to talk about rivers or any topic that ties in to enjoying the great outdoors.

See you on the water!
